The Cycle of Contraction and Expansion: A Nervous System Approach to Emotional Healing and Self-Trust

Embodied woman in a moment of stillness, representing contraction and expansion in the healing journey

I noticed a pattern I’ve been playing out…

One where I go into this intense contraction.

It feels like I’m holding my breath —
wondering, hoping, praying it will all work out…

Until I can’t hold it anymore.

I can’t hold the pressure.

And then… I collapse.

I give up.
I sink.
I spiral into the stories buried beneath:

“I can’t do this.”
“I’m not cut out for this.”
“It’s not going to happen for me.”
“What’s the point…”

And I would lose myself in that…
again and again and again.

🌿 The Pattern Beneath the Spiral

This pattern has been with me my whole life.

And even now — after doing so much inner work —
it still shows up.

But something has shifted.

It doesn’t take me fully anymore.

I don’t lose myself completely.

Now… I notice the contraction.

I feel it.
I sit with it.
Sometimes I fight it.
Sometimes I surrender to it.

And in that process… something happens.

I begin to integrate.
I receive wisdom.
And slowly… I re-open.

It feels like a rebirth.

Like growing through the mud of the experience…
and blossoming, like a lotus flower.

🌸 Why Emotional Healing Takes Time

And I’ve been contemplating this deeply—

Why do some things take so long to shift?

Why does healing, growth, and transformation feel like this constant push and pull?

What I’ve come to see is this:

We’re not broken.

We’re moving through a natural rhythm of
contraction and expansion.

This is the nervous system.
This is the body.
This is life.

🌬️ The Nervous System and Contraction

It’s not as simple as just “opening to receive”…

Because when you’re in deep contraction…

it’s like you’re locked in.

Frozen.

Like you couldn’t move even if you tried…
and yet you are trying.

And that first tiny crack of opening?

That is the hardest part.

That is the part that often takes the longest.

Because you’re not just “choosing differently”—

You’re working with a highly contracted, fearful nervous system.

With layers of:

  • beliefs

  • conditioning

  • subconscious programming

  • fear responses

  • generational patterns

And it all feels so real.

🌿 The Moment Everything Begins to Shift

But then—

There’s a moment.

A softening.

Like finally taking a breath…
even if it’s just a shallow one…

after holding your breath for what felt like forever.

And suddenly… life can begin to flow in again.

🌸 Contraction and Expansion Are Part of Growth

And yes — you will contract again.

But something changes.

Opening feels a little easier.

And each time you move through this cycle—

contraction → awareness → opening

it becomes easier to return.

To breathe.
To soften.
To trust.

The contraction doesn’t stop.

It’s not meant to.

It’s part of life.

The ebb and flow.
The inhale and the exhale.

✨ Reframing Contraction (This Changes Everything)

Contraction doesn’t have to mean:

  • freezing

  • collapsing

  • disconnecting

It can become part of the rhythm.

Something you learn to move with
instead of something you fight against.

And that’s where the magic happens.

Where life begins to feel:

alive
energised
connected
full of life force and beauty

🌿 Meeting Yourself in the Contraction

So when you feel the contraction—

Can you honour it?

Instead of making it wrong…
or something you need to fix?

Because the more we label it as a “block”…

the more we actually strengthen it.

But when you meet it with curiosity—

Everything shifts.

Ask yourself:

What is this contraction showing me?
Revealing to me?
Preparing me for?
Inviting me into?

There is so much wisdom here.

When you learn to trust it.

When you learn to trust yourself.

🤍 This Is the Work

Learning to feel safe within your own body…
so you can move through both contraction and expansion
without losing yourself.

So you can stay with you…

in all of it.
